What's New?
===========
PICK-UP Version 1.4 is a maintenance release, plus a little
more.
Completely new to PICK-UP 1.4 are:
- Timed Script Launching
- SIMPLE Script Compiling
- Expanded DOS functions for Creating, Deleting
and Renaming Directories
- Internal File Viewer
- File size displayed in PICK-List
Maintenance Features include:
- Improved Print Routine (now uses SALT function)
and has configurable form feed option
- Expanded User Documentation
- Your name in the Screen Blanker box
- Improved File Uploading procedure
New Features:
Many PICK-UP user's have asked for a way to perform delayed
script launches in PICK-UP. PICK-UP now will allow you to
set a time, like late at night, to perform mail runs or
unattended uploads with a user supplied script.
Since SIMPLE has joined the Telix family, it is now
an option in Script mode. SIMPLE scripts compiled with a
registered Telix CSS.EXE will automatically generate the
intermediate .SLT file, a great learning tool for aspiring
SALTwriters. Shareware versions will also be compiled, but
no .SLT's will be generated.
Enhanced directory functions have been added to keep you
from having to shell out to DOS for such routine tasks as
creating, deleting or renaming a directory.
PICK-UP now includes an internal File Viewer. If no File
Viewer is configured, PICK-UP will default to its own.
The PICK-List has been updated to display the size of the
highlighted file.
Page -2-
Improved Features:
Print jobs have been moved to a SALT function to promote
better compatibility across different platforms. You will
notice the standard SALT "Printer Log" windows when printing
files, but it's worth the extra stability. Also, a "Form
Feed" option has been added to PUCONFIG which allows you to
decide whether or not you want a form feed (page eject)
included with each print job.
The Documentation has been expanded into more of a User's
Guide format. It is intended to help new User's to PICK-UP
and telecommunications in general get "more/faster" in each
PICK-UP/Telix session. Examples are included with the
SCRIPT Mode descriptions which allow you to create and
compile some sample SIMPLE and SALT scripts.
The Screen Blanker Box now displays the name of the
registered user.
File uploading has been improved. Now you can highlight the
file you want to upload before going online. When you are
ready to upload the file and invoke PICK-UP, the file will
still be highlighted so you can <Press>Alt-S immediately to
send the file. This eliminated the step of having to cursor
through the PICK-List to find the file.
SPECIAL THANKS:
===============
I would like to thank Chris Johnson for doing such complete
documentation for this version. Without his efforts, you would
be reading a list of my notes instead of a true users guide.
Thanks Chris (AKA: CompuMess INC.)!
I would like to thank my wonderful wife for putting up with
being a "Computer Widow" while I worked on this new version.
I thank all of my registered users and those that are soon to
be registered.
I thank YOU for taking the time to give PICK-UP a try.
Page -3-
What is PICK-UP?
================
PICK-UP is a utility program, written completely in SALT,
designed to enhance your time spent using Telix. PICK-UP
accomplishes this task with a full featured menu which
anticipates your needs. The options offered allow you to
stay within the Telix environment minimizing the need to
shell out to DOS. As a result, your Telix sessions will be
more productive saving you keystrokes, time and money.
Using PICK-UP you can:
* Perform the most commonly used DOS commands
* Write, edit and print text/script files
* Run and/or Compile SALT/SIMPLE scripts
* Set a "timer" to run a script at a specified time
* Upload files and messages
* Load or change to a different Dialing directory
* Set a timed delay to start screen saver
PICK-UP is configurable, meaning you can set it up to match
your particular needs. You determine how you want PICK-UP
to work for you and save the setup for future sessions.
PICK-UP offers three modes to work in:
* REGULAR - for all files
* SCRIPT - for SALT (.SLT .SLC) and SIMPLE (.SIM) files
* MESSAGE - for .MSG files
REGULAR mode is useful for performing general housekeeping
functions, helping you keep your files in order. This mode
is also used for uploading files.
SCRIPT mode makes the job of writing, compiling and running
SALT/SIMPLE scripts a breeze. In SCRIPT mode you can quickly
jump out of your editor, compile the script, run the script
and return to the editor to make changes or continue coding.
MESSAGE mode is for writing and sending messages. PICK-UP
makes it easy to write your messages offline and then
upload them quickly when you are online saving you connect
time on the BBS and possibly long distance charges.
Page -4-
Now with this out of the way, let's check a few things in
your Telix configuration and get PICK-UP installed.
Installing PICK-UP Note: Instructions assume you
================== are using Telix v3.21
4.1 Configure Your Text Editor in Telix
PICK-UP looks to your Telix configuration to see which text
editor you use, so you need to be sure it is defined. If
you already have your editor configured, check to make sure
you've included the full path name, then skip to 4.2. If
you don't have an editor configured, here's the steps you
must perform:
1. Start Telix
2. <Press and Hold>Alt then <Press>O
3. <Press>F (Filenames and Paths)
4. <Press>H (Editor Name)
5. <Type> full path to your text editor
Example: C:\util\editor.exe
6. <Press>Enter twice
7. <Press>W (to save your change)
4.2 Configure Your Script Directory in Telix
PICK-UP also looks to your Telix configuration to see where
your script files are stored. If your script directory is
already defined, make sure you have included a trailing "\"
then skip to 4.3. If you don't have a script directory, you
must create a subdirectory under your Telix directory to
hold script files i.e. C:\TELIX\SCRIPTS\. Now, to configure
Telix:
1. <Start> Telix
2. <Press and Hold>Alt then <Press>O
3. <Press>F (Filenames and Paths)
4. <Press>C (Script Directory)
5. <Type> complete path to your script directory
Ex.: C:\TELIX\SCRIPTS\ (Note trailing "\")
6. <Press>Enter twice
7. <Press>W (to save your change)
4.3 Copy PICK-UP Files to your Telix Script Directory
PICK-UP requires four files to be copied to your defined
Telix script directory: PICKUP.SLC, PUCONFIG.SLC, CS.EXE,
and CSS.EXE. You can find CS.EXE, the SALT compiler, and
CSS.EXE, the SIMPLE compiler in your Telix root directory.
CS.EXE and CSS.EXE must be present in your Telix script
directory.
Page -5-
Starting PICK-UP
================
5.1 When you start Telix
There are several ways to start PICK-UP, but in order to
realize its full potential, it's recommended to run it
automatically when you start Telix. To do this, just add
"spickup" , (no quotes), to your Telix start up sequence.
From the DOS command line it would look like this:
C:\TELIX>telix spickup (Of course you will substitute
your own drive and directory
if they differ from this
example.)
You will find that starting Telix with PICK-UP will result
in more productive Telix sessions.
When you need to work from the Telix terminal screen, or
when you are online, you'll want a quick method to call
PICK-UP,
5.2 Hot Key Method from the Terminal Screen or while Online
The quickest and best way to start PICK-UP from the terminal
screen or while online is to create a keyboard macro. You
can define a Hot Key sequence so that PICK-UP will always
be available when time is money.
Here's how:
Starting at the Telix terminal screen:
1. <Press and Hold>Alt then <Press>K
2. <Press>Enter (for Regular table)
3. <Press>E (for Edit)
4. <Type> the Hot Key combination or function key you
wish to use. For example Alt-P or F10
5. <Type>@PICKUP (to run PICK-UP when Hot Key is
pressed.)
6. <Press>spacebar (to exit Edit mode)
7. <Press>S (to save your definition)
8. <Press>Enter (writes definition to TELIX.KEY)
9. <Press>X or ESC (return to Terminal screen)
5.3 Manual Method from the Telix Terminal Screen
For all you diehards who prefer the manual method:
Starting at the Telix terminal screen:
1. <Press and Hold>Alt then <Press>G
2. <Type>PICKUP and <Press>Enter
Page -6-
Configuring PICK-UP
===================
If you're already a Registered PICK-UP user, you can skip
this section. For those of you who are "first timers", it's
time to start PICK-UP and configure some options.
First you need to start PICK-UP from the command line, with
a Hot Key, or with Alt-G from the Terminal screen. You will
see the following message:
Running PUCONFIG the PICK-UP configuration script.
and the PICK-UP Configuration screen will be displayed.
The options you can configure are listed on the box titled,
"Change which settings?" It's best to start at the top and
work your way down the list. Don't worry if you can't make
up your mind about any of the options, you can always run
PUCONFIG later to make changes.
----- OPTIONS -----

Once you have your colors set, it's time to tell PICK-UP
where your ASCII File View utility program is located.
PICK-UP has a built in File Viewer that it will use if you
do not specify the full path name of an alternate utility.
Page -7-
Configuring PICK-UP (continued)
===================
PICK-UP requires that you enter a full path name for your
file view program.
The Screen Blank Time is defaulted to 45 seconds. To change
this time, enter the number of seconds you desire or enter 0
(zero) to disable screen blanking. Long time PICK-UP
users will be pleased to note that the Screen Blanker
message box now displays their name as used to register
PICK-UP.
The next item to configure is the method you want PICK-UP to
use to display files in the PICK-List. You have three
choices for file sorting.
NO SORT - The fastest method, but files are randomly
displayed.
SORT 1 - Use this if you do not use another program
to sort your directories and files. Your
files are displayed alphabetically making it
easy to quickly search through long lists.
SORT 2 - Use this if you regularly run a disk utility
program that sorts your directories and
files alphabetically.
The last item to configure is to choose whether or not you
want a form feed at the end of each print job.
Once all options are configured, be sure to SAVE your
settings when you exit. The first time you configure PICK-UP
your changes will take effect immediately.
If at a later date, you need to make changes to your PICK-UP
configuration, run PUCONFIG from the Telix terminal screen.
Here's how:
1. <Press>Alt-G at the Telix Terminal Screen
2. <Type>PUCONFIG
3. <Press>Enter
4. <Configure> Options
5. <Select> SAVE Settings and Exit
6. <Press>Enter
7. <Start> PICK-UP to see your new changes.
Page -8-
Putting PICK-UP to Work
=======================
Modes- PICK-UP offers three modes to work in depending on the tasks
you need to perform. To alternate between modes, use the TAB
key and select from the box displayed at the bottom of your
screen. The Mode you select will determine what types of
files will be displayed in the PICK-List on the left side of
your screen. Modes can be selected using the TAB, left/right
arrows, or the Key letter.
Pick- Use the Up/Down arrow keys,PgUp/PgDn, Home/End to highlight
List a directory and then <Press>Enter to open the directory.
Again, the Mode you are in will dictate which types of files are
displayed.
Tip: You can also use the forward slash '/' and back slash
'\' keys for quick directory changes.
Regular Mode - All files are displayed
Message Mode - .MSG files are displayed
Script Mode - .SLT or .SLC or .SIM files are displayed
Menu- PICK-UP has a smart Menu whose options change depending upon
what is highlighted in the Pick List, what Mode you have
selected, or whether or not you are online. They are:
ENTER = View/Cd - Files are viewed. Directories changed
C = Copy - Copies selected file to typed path
M = Move - Moves selected file to typed path
R = Rename - Rename a file or directory
D = Delete - Deletes file or (empty) directory
E = Edit - Edit selected file
P = Print - Print selected file
W = Write - Opens a new file for editing
INS = Make Dir - Creates a new directory
H = Help - Invokes Help Screen
U = Update - Refreshes directory in PICK-List
when files are written or deleted
outside of PICK-UP
ALT-S = Send - Sends Message or Uploads File
ALT-D = Dial - Opens the current Dialing Directory
CTL-D = New Dial - Open another Dialing Directory
ALT-J = DOS Jump - Shell to DOS
ALT-C = Compile - Compiles selected script file (.SIM/.SLT)
ALT-G = Run SLC - Highlighted file in Script dir. (Script
Mode). Other Modes <Type>filename
CTL-G = Launch SLC - Set time for future event
\ = Cd/Drive - Change current working drive/directory
TAB = Mode - Change current mode
S = Save CFG - Saves current Menu settings
ESC = Exit - Exit PICK-UP
ALT-X = Exit TELIX - Exit PICK-UP and Telix
Page -9-
REGULAR Mode:
=============
Offline -
Regular Mode allows you access to all files in the PICK-List.
You can perform the most commonly used DOS functions for
maintaining your files.
Online / Uploading Files -
Here's where PICK-UP can save you time and money. PICK-UP
remembers what directory you were in and the file you have
highlighted when you go online. So when you're ready to
upload the file you will be able to quickly send it. This
process has been significantly improved in Version 1.4 to
immediately display the directory and highlighted file you
had specified before going online.
An Upload Example:
1. <Highlight>the desired file to upload using PICK-UP
2. <Press>Alt-D to load your Dialing directory and
make your call.
3. <Perform>the normal steps to upload a file as required
by the BBS you are calling.
4. When the BBS is ready to receive your file:
- <Press>your PICK-UP Hot-Key
- <Press>Alt-S (to send the highlighted file
- <Select>the desired protocol
PICK-UP will upload your file.
Note: Due to a problem with Telix 3.20, non-message mode
uploading does not work with this single Telix
version. This problem was fixed in Telix Version
3.21 and did not exist in versions before 3.20.
Page -10-
MESSAGE Mode:
============
Message Mode is especially useful for handling non-mail
packet messages. When you select Message Mode, only files
with the extension .MSG will be displayed in the PICK-List.
The greatest advantage to Message Mode is that you can
compose messages offline and then upload them using ASCII
protocol when online with a significant savings in time.
The Message process can best be described in steps.
From the PICK-UP Menu:
- <Select>a directory to hold your message file
- <Press>TAB and <Select>MESSAGE
- <Press>W and <Type><filename>.MSG and <Press>Enter
- <Type>your message and save with Text Editor
You're now back to PICK-UP and the message you
just wrote is highlighted.
- <Press>Alt-D to start Dialing directory
- <Call>BBS
- <Perform> the normal steps on the BBS for entering a
message including entering SUBJECT: and To:. When
you're at the point where you'd normally start typing
the body of your message...
- <Press>your Hot-Key for PICK-UP.
- <Press>Alt-S (to send the highlighted message file)
Your message will now be sent to the BBS in a fraction
of the time it would normally take you to type it.
When the message has finished being sent.
Now control returns to the BBS...
- <Save>the message using the steps normal for your BBS
- You're on the BBS to either continue with other
business or exit. When you do exit the BBS, you'll
be returned to PICK-UP.
Remember that in MESSAGE Mode only files with the extension
.MSG will be displayed. If you are working with ASCII files
with extensions other than .MSG, you can use PICK-UP's
(R)ename or (C)opy functions to convert these files to *.MSG
files.
You can also use PICK-UP to compose messages while online
using your own familiar editor, instead the of BBS's editor.
Once your message is composed, you can use PICK-UP to send
it. If you do use this method remember, you are subject to
the inactivity time as defined by your BBS, so it's normally
better to prepare your messages offline.
Page -11-
SCRIPT Mode:
============
PICK-UP now supports SALT and SIMPLE language files. Using
SCRIPT Mode you can minimize the edit-compile-run cycle to
make your time spent programming more productive.
When you start SCRIPT Mode you choose between .SLT .SLC and
.SIM files. The type you choose will be the only type
displayed in the PICK-List.
When compiling SIMPLE scripts, registered Telix user's
should note that PICK-UP will create the intermediate .SLT
file by default (not supported for unregistered Telix copies).
The .SLT files can be studied to learn more about SALT.
Perhaps the best way to demonstrate the power of this
feature is to write some small scripts in SIMPLE and SALT
that you can compile and run.
Let's start with a SIMPLE script. The quickest way to get
started is to:
1. <Press>TAB and <Select>SCRIPT then <Select>SIM
2. <Press>the "/" or "\" keys to jump to your
Script directory.
3. <Press>W and <Type>SIMDEMO.SIM and <Press>Enter
4. <Type>the following exactly as it appears:
//SIMDEMO.SIM - PICK-UP Demo for SIMPLE
clearscreen
sound 220, 30
sound 440, 60
date string1
time string2
message string1
show string2 enter
wait 30
5. <Save>SIMDEMO.SIM with your Text Editor
6. <Press>Alt-C to compile script. If you made no
mistakes, you will see:
CSS v2.0 - Telix{tm} v3.21 SIMPLE script compiler.
CSS done...
Press any key to continue...
If you get the CSS Done message, skip to Step 7.
Page -12-
SCRIPT Mode: (continued)
==================
If you instead get a compiler error message, it means you
made a typo, and are only human <G>. Here's how to fix it:
- <Press>any key to continue
- <Press>E to edit SIMDEMO.SIM
- <Find>the mistake and correct it
- <Save>SIMDEMO.SIM
- <Go Back>to Step 6.
7. <Press>Alt-G to run SIMDEMO.SIM
To get a feel for the power of PICK-UP, try making changes
to SIMDEMO.SIM. See how fast you can go from editing to
compiling to running the script. Refer to your Telix Manual
for other SIMPLE commands you can try with SIMDEMO.SIM or
write some scripts of your own.
If you're a registered Telix user, take a look at
SIMDEMO.SLT to see the intermediate file created by the
SIMPLE compiler. Above all, don't worry about making
mistakes. The process of writing scripts/programs rarely
meets with success on the first try!
Now let's write a SALT script.
1. <Press>TAB and <Select>SCRIPT then <Select>SLT
2. <Press>the "/" or "\" key to jump to your
Script directory.
3. <Press>W and <Type>SLTDEMO.SLT and <Press>Enter
4. <Type>the following exactly as it appears:
//SLTDEMO.SLT - PICK-UP SALT script demo
str s_1[8], s_2[8];
main()
{
clear_scr();
box (11,11,71,21,0,0,0);
box (10,10,70,20,3,0,113);
pstraxy ("Today's date: ", 12,12,113);
date(curtime(),s_1);
pstraxy (s_1, 33,12,31);
pstraxy ("The Current time is: ", 12,14,113);
time(curtime(),s_2);
pstraxy (s_2, 33,14,31);
pstraxy ("PICK-UP makes script writing easy!", 23,18,116);
cursor_onoff(0);
delay(50);
cursor_onoff(1);
clear_scr();
}
Page -13-
SCRIPT Mode: (continued)
===================
5. <Save>SLTDEMO.SLT with your Text Editor
6. <Press>Alt-C to compile script. If you made no
mistakes, you will see:
CS done...
Press any key to continue...
If you instead get a compiler error message, it means you
made a typo. Note in the error message which line in the
script is triggering the error. (Note: many times the error
is actually in the line before the one listed by the
compiler.) Here's how to fix it:
- <Press>any key to continue
- <Press>E to edit SLTDEMO.SLT
- <Find>the mistake and correct it
- <Save>SLTDEMO.SIM
- <Go Back>to Step 6.
7. <Press>Alt-G to run SLTDEMO.SIM
Again, to get a better feel of the power of PICK-UP, try
making some changes to SLTDEMO.SLT. Refer to the SALT
Manual on how to change colors, line positions or how long
the script is displayed on the screen. You'll see how easy
it is to write and test your SALT code.
